Getting to Tavarua

Travelling from Cali to Tavarua is a whole day's journey. There  is now a direct flight from San Francisco, as well as Los Angeles. We take a flight that leaves on Thursday night but we arrive on Saturday morning.  We fly over both the equator and the international date line, losing Friday in the process.

Once we land in Fiji the Tavarua (Tavi) guests load up into a shuttle to go out to breakfast.  We arrive very early and the guests for the previous week will not have left the island yet. We spend 2-3 hours at the Maclure Hotel in Nadi.  We depart at 9:45 am and spend nearly an hour in the shuttles heading to the coast. The first part of the drive is on a major road, then we turn off and travel the last 20 minutes on bumpy dirt roads.  We arrive at the "dock" and the boats bringing the previous weeks guests have not yet arrived.  It is low tide so we begin walking out to where the boats can come pick us up.

Once the boats arrive they pick up the passengers while Fijiana workers carry the luggage and surf boards out to the boat. We take a half hour boat ride to Tavi.  This year the boat ride was just a little damp.

Once we get to Tavarua, we have to wade into the island for to the low tide.

Once arriving in Tavi you know you are in paradise...
